Melissa B. is an Afro-Rican singer, songwriter, recording artist, author, and technology professional whose career bridges music, innovation, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. A Billboard-charting independent artist and Recording Academy Voting Member, she has built an international body of work rooted in R&B while moving fluidly through soul, dance, house, electronic music, Afro-influenced rhythms, and atmospheric contemporary production.
Born in South Carolina and raised with a global perspective, Melissa has developed a career defined by independence and creative ownership. Her music combines emotionally direct songwriting, sensual vocals, lush production, and an unmistakably modern edge. Rather than allowing genre to define her, Melissa approaches each record as its own world—creating music that can move from intimate late-night R&B to dance floors, international radio, and collaborative projects across genres.
Her recording career gained wider attention with the release of her debut EP, Exclusively, which was submitted for GRAMMY consideration. In 2017, “Dancing in the Rain,” by Juan Cristiani featuring Melissa B., reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales chart. She returned to Billboard in 2022 when “Physical,” produced by B. Howard and Kyle Beatz and engineered by Michael Ashby, reached No. 13 on Billboard’s R&B Digital Song Sales chart.
Melissa’s music has since continued to travel well beyond the United States. Her catalog has appeared on iTunes, Apple Music, Traxsource, Beatport, Digital Radio Tracker and other music platforms in territories across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. Her recordings and collaborations have generated chart activity in countries including Greece, France, Taiwan, Canada, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Malawi and the United Kingdom.
Recent years have marked another significant chapter in Melissa’s evolution.
Her single “One Up” became one of the defining records of this era of her career, receiving international radio support and charting activity while reaching listeners around the world. In 2026, “One Up” won the InterContinental Music Award in the R&B category for North America, adding another international honor to Melissa’s independent career.
The record followed Melissa’s continuing expansion across R&B, dance and global music. Releases including “Higher,” along with her catalog of house and dance collaborations, have further connected her music to international DJs, radio programmers, curators and audiences.
Melissa has worked with an evolving network of producers, musicians and creatives throughout her career, including B. Howard, Michael Ashby and DJ Spen. Her work also extends into jazz through “Velvet Crime,” written and performed by Melissa for trumpeter Syreeta Thompson’s album Legacy In Motion.
The collaboration reflects another dimension of Melissa’s artistry: cinematic, sophisticated songwriting that moves naturally beyond conventional R&B boundaries.
Her connection to the GRAMMY community extends beyond her own releases. Melissa is a Recording Academy Voting Member and has been credited as a participant on the GRAMMY-nominated album The Colors In My Mind. Throughout her career, she has remained deeply engaged in the independent music community while advocating for greater ownership, access and opportunity for creators.
That commitment to independence also became the foundation of her work as an author.
Melissa is the author of Digitally Independent, a music-business guide created to help independent artists understand branding, distribution, marketing, artist development, technology and the rapidly changing digital music ecosystem. Its expanded second edition incorporates the realities of today’s creator economy, including emerging technology and artificial intelligence, while reinforcing a principle that has shaped Melissa’s own career: artists should understand the business surrounding their creativity.
Long before technology became inseparable from the modern music industry, it was already part of Melissa’s life.
Alongside her career as an artist, Melissa built a professional career in technology and network engineering. She founded Girl Geek Dinners NYC, an initiative created to encourage and empower women and girls interested in technology and computer science. Her work across technology and music has allowed her to occupy a space rarely represented in entertainment—a working technologist who also understands firsthand what it means to build and operate an independent creative career.
For Melissa, those worlds are no longer separate.
Technology, music, storytelling, artificial intelligence, independent ownership and global communication increasingly intersect throughout her creative work. Whether she is developing a record, writing, building new digital platforms or exploring new ways for independent artists to reach audiences, innovation remains part of the process.
Her career has also earned recognition from organizations including the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, Global Music Awards and the InterContinental Music Awards, alongside Billboard and international chart achievements accumulated across more than a decade of independent releases.
Yet Melissa B.’s story is not simply about chart positions or awards.
It is about longevity.
It is about remaining independent while continuing to evolve.
And it is about building a creative legacy in which music, technology and purpose exist together.
As Melissa enters the next phase of her career, her focus is increasingly global—connecting her music with audiences, radio, DJs and creative communities throughout Africa, Latin America, Europe, Asia and beyond while continuing to develop a catalog designed to live far beyond a single release cycle.
Melissa B. is not waiting for the industry to define what an independent artist can become.
She is building her own definition.
